What A Ride

Having 2 blogs is tough. I use one to write about random stuff, and this one to write about working out and my plans for world domination!! I sure don't write in this one as much as I have wanted, which is probably why my fitness plans are lacking. So, where do I stand right now?? Let me catch you up....


    I've been fighting a tendon injury which has sidelined me some. It's hard to do any bicep work. Since it's my left arm, I've just stopped upper body all together. What I have been doing is focusing on my diet. Meal prep has been the key. Making meals for the week has helped with the cravings, and eating bad. What I do is cook enough food for 4 days. Giving myself 1 cheat day a week. I've also increased my water intake and cut out the Dr. Peppers. I'm hoping that by doing this, I will get enough caloric intake, while maintaining a healthy diet. Once I began working out again, I will start adding protein shakes in to my meals, to aide with muscle recovery.


   Diets fail for one reason. No one can sustain the sudden diet change. One of the things I'm doing is focusing on a healthy breakfast until it becomes habit. Once that sets in, I will change over to work on snacks for about a month. Then I will work in changing lunch and dinner. Hopefully, that will gradually led me to an overall healthy diet.


    The workouts will be two fold. The days I have the kids, I will do kettle bell swings, and work on core conditioning. When I don't have the kids, it will be a combo of weights and cardio. My goal is to have myself ready to the Tough Mudder season next year. I have a goal to complete 3 over the course of a year. I will be doing 1 in Texas, and 2 out of state.

Training Again

I'll be the first to admit that keeping a workout schedule is tough. Work has been kicking my ass lately. The heat is draining for sure. For those that wanna reach the ultimate goal, it's no excuse. It shouldn't be mine either. 

I'm disappointed in myself for slacking. Now, we are seeing the heat started to subside and now it's time to get back in gear. I just turned 37, and I feel as young as ever. What my plan is going forward, is back to 2-a-days, and a lot more explosive exercises. 

In my next post, I will try and break down my workouts. I've learned that writing everything for people to see keeps you honest and let's others know how hard or easy things are. I'd write more but it's getting late and I'm tired

Welcome Back!!!

  Well, it has certainly been awhile. Life got in the way of my writing. Kinda sad, cause I really missed it. So I am back with a vengeance. A lot has happened in the past 2 years. Life has taken a turn for the worse that ended up being for the best. After many fights and struggles, my marriage ended and I had to start over. Turns out this was just what I needed. My life is so much better now. I am able to focus on some of the things that make me happy. 

The gym has become my second home again. In case you were wondering, I actually completed my first Tough Mudder in November 2014. I learned a ton from the experience and took a lot of this info to use in my fitness goals. Why not go all out and do the hardest one. I certainly did that when I chose the Marines over everyone else. Some say it is a calling, but I believe that pushing ourselves to a place it's never been is the only way to truly test out character and fortitude. 

Having said that, my fitness goals have become clear. Build strength while increasing muscle endurance and cardio. Right now, I am in the strength phase but fit it a little cardio. Truth be told, I need more cardio just to help with fat loss. I also do some circuit training at home. I want to build explosion and fast twitch muscle by quick movements. 

I will get into everything a little more later. Right now, I've typed this whole thing on my phone which pretty much sucked!!next time, we will tackle all kinds of things. Tune in soon

Rough Week

Well, I wish I could say that this week is turning out as good as last week, but I can't. It's been a little bit of a rougher road than I was expecting. I took the weekend off so I could rest, which was probably a smart idea. You sure don't want to overdo it the first 2 weeks, but having days off end up having an ill response from my mind. One way or another, my mind starts to justify another day off as common, since I had two days off before. Luckily I have caught myself before the week got away from me. I did a shorter version of my fight training Tuesday morning, and meant to do it again this morning, but slept an extra hour. Now, I have to fit it in tonight. Although I don't mind working out at night, it does come at a loss to family time. That was the whole point of hitting my workouts early in the morning. I will get back on track and make this week worth my while.

From here on out, I will work out 6 days a week, and take Sunday off to rest. Sarah and I have been sticking to our breakfast which I can feel that I have lost a little bit of weight. Time to be positive and step up to the plate and get this week done. No time for rest now. This will end up being a short post today, since I need to get back to work. I will have a better post in the coming days. Let's just get it done. No excuse, No looking back!!

The Week That Was!

Yeah, I know, I stole that title from somewhere else. So sue me!! I completed the first week of Rushfit, and have felt great. I only did 5 days worth, and skipped the weekend balance workout. I did to a little running and playing Frisbee on Sunday with the family, so I definitely got some sweating in. What lessons did I learn from last week?

#1 Having daily check in's with someone you respect sure makes you jump up in the morning.
#2 Getting up at 4am isn't as bad as it sounds.
#3 Working out that early, gives me much needed family time after work.
#4 I can actually do this with every once of effort I can muster.

I start my second week eating the same breakfast as last week. I've gotten use to it now, and actually look forward to it. I haven't lost much in the weight department, but I'm sure it will start coming off now that I am in week 2. This weeks workouts are a lot more cardio based, so I should start to see it more. I have fight conditioning tonight, then cardio in the morning, followed by stretching and flexibility in the evening. The next few days will be tough with a couple of 2-a-days, but nothing that is not doable.

On a side note, I was talking to Gary last week, and we working on signing up for Tough Mudder in October 2013, and he wanted me to go ahead and sign up for the Austin one in April. I didn't expect to complete 2 next year, but why not. If I am set on meeting my goals. Its the only way. Stay tuned for more.

The Fear of a Letdown

With the completion of the first week almost here, I look back on the week that was. This journey of mine was suppose to start a week earlier, after a phone call from Gary. We talked for a long time about my fitness goals, current eating habits, and daily schedule. For the week that followed, I kept finding excuses to sleep in and not get up and get my day started right. When Sunday came around, and it was time for Gary to call and check in, I was embarrassed with myself for not hardly working out at all. You can make anything sound reasonable in your head, but when you are trying to tell your friend why you became lazy and didn't follow thru, those excuses become hollow and forgotten!!

We altered our plan just a bit. Sarah and I now consume a breakfast of eggs, mixed veggies, and a cup of coffee with cinnamon. On top of that, I text Gary every morning to tell him what I did for the morning, and he does the same in the evening. He also sends a little motivation my way. As of today, I have woken every morning at 4am and completed my workout. I have also spent 2 nights this week completing an ab and core workout, and a yoga style class. I can honestly say it's been a long time since I have felt this good. Although the weight hasn't started to come off yet, I just physically and mentally feel better. The soreness actually feels good. Doing Rushfit has been very helpful as far as following a schedule,. I also know it is working because of the muscle soreness I am getting from many areas I usually don't pay attention too. I'm not going to sit here and fill your head with BS. I found the first day hard to complete, having to take a little break during the third round, but I did finish the rest of it. This morning, I had to complete the same workout as Monday, and I did even better. I'm able to pick up the intensity a little bit too. Tomorrow is an exciting day because I am doing a workout I have never done before. Should be interesting to say the least. Saturday, I have a cardio session and a balance and agility workout. Let's finish this week strong and get ready for a new week with more breakthrough's

The Beginning: My Journey

Why would you do this? That's the question many people have asked me. Why not? At 34 years of age, I am certainly not getting any younger. Having served nearly 6 years in the Marines makes everything else seem easy. Somewhere along the way, I forgot about the discipline and fitness involved in such an elite organization. I allowed myself to get out of shape, and my eating habits went down the drain. I caught myself at the park one day playing a half-ass game of softball with my daughter and realized that after 2 runs around the bases chasing her that I was horribly out of shape. That brought to mind the fact that my dad wasn't able to play a lot with me when I was younger cause he never took good care of his body. His shoulder's hurt and so did his back. I missed the days of playing catch or throwing the football.

I vowed to myself that I wouldn't do that to my kids, and so I started working out, but kept getting lazy and stopping. My eating habits were not the best either. Crash dieting just wasn't smart. One day, I started to realize that one of my great friends and Marine brothers, was doing things I could only dream about. I started consulting him on different issues I was having, and wanted some guidance. I was about to start doing the Rushfit program for the next 8 weeks, and thought some encouragement would go a long way. We set it up to have daily text updates about our workouts, and also start working on the eating part. He told me to start with one meal change a day. Breakfast changed for me, and now my wife and I eat eggs, mixed veggies, and a cup of coffee with cinnamon every morning. I have also completed 2 days of my program. It has felt great up to this point.

Before I started, I began to wonder what would I do to keep this going once I complete this program. I have done a Qtr. triathlon before, but wasn't a huge fan of the running part. What came next gave me more of a reason. I want to become and adventure athlete. What does that mean?? I want to start competing in adventure races like Mud Run, Spartan Race, and finally Tough Mudder. I have always been searching for something to fill the void of being in the Corps, and I think I have found it. Over the course of time, I will write posts about my training, and  life changes that not only me, but my wife are going thru. Through the guidance of my Marine Brother, Gary, we will focus our lives on healthy living and sustained change to help give our children a brighter future. Gary text me something last night that I want to repeat, so I will sign off with that quote, and see you on the flip side. Cardio tonight!!!
